DARREN HILDROW
Retail Strategist & Founder of THE JEWELRY CASTWhat's the single biggest gap you saw that The Jewelry Cast was built to fill?
Young bench jewellers and designers are trained to make beautiful pieces but nobody teaches them how to build a brand around that skill. Branding, buyers, pricing, social media, sustainability, the whole business of turning great making into a real business. That's the gap we built The Jewelry Cast to fill: giving designers the full picture, not just the craft.
How does your global retail network translate into direct sales opportunities for a new brand?
It's not about being introduced to a list of stores, it's about walking into rooms where the relationship already exists. When a buyer trusts who's bringing the brand to them, the conversation starts from "show me" instead of "convince me." That's the difference between a cold pitch and a warm order.
What does a brand need to have in place before they're ready to approach luxury retail buyers?
A clear identity, consistent production capability, and pricing that actually works at wholesale margins. Buyers aren't just buying beautiful pieces they're buying reliability. If you can't answer "can you deliver this at scale, on time, every season," you're not ready yet.
What's the one conversation that changes everything for a brand trying to break into wholesale?
The moment a buyer stops asking "why should I carry this?" and starts asking "how much can you get me by when?" That shift—from persuasion to logistics—is the real turning point. Everything before it is pitching. Everything after it is business.
What do you know now that you wish every brand founder knew before their first buyer meeting?
The meeting isn't about your story. It's about their store. Buyers are thinking about their customer, their floor space, their margins. The founders who walk in speaking that language, not just their own passion for the craft, are the ones who walk out with an order.
What does it actually take to build a retail network that lasts?
Consistency and trust, repeated over years, not seasons. Anyone can get one order. A lasting network comes from delivering on time, standing behind the product, and showing up again and again until buyers stop thinking of you as a new brand and start thinking of you as one of theirs.
